How did it start?

How it all began…..

WAAD and ASLIA (WA) have a strong relationship and history of supporting each other’s projects. The Deaf community view themselves as a cultural linguistic minority with a rich history, culture and language to be proud of and one that they are keen to tell. Whilst the communities that both organisations represent are separate, their histories are intertwined and connected. In November 2020, the WA Museum reopened after a 4 year building project, rebranding as Boola Bardip and putting a call out for expressions of interests to host events and programs at the new museum site. Boola Bardip means ‘many stories’ in Noongar, and WAAD and ASLIA (WA) saw this as an opportunity to share the many stories of the WA Deaf Community and put forward a proposal – which was accepted!

And thus the hard work began to explore the wonderful, rich history of the WA Deaf Community and tell these hidden, forgotten stories, to show how this history has added to and enhanced the cultural and linguistic diversity that is Australia of today.

And so the story continues……
