Interpreters and ethics
Did you know credentialed Auslan-English and Deaf Interpreters must follow a Code of Ethics? Like many other professions, ethical guidelines are important to protect the Deaf Community, interpreters and the wider community from unethical practices.
The Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Professional Conduct ensures that interpreters maintain professional standards such as impartiality and confidentiality, continuing professional development and accepting work within one's scope of practice.
The ASLIA Code of Ethics includes the following values:
Professional Accountability: Accepting responsibility for professional decisions and actions.
Professional Competence: Committing to provide quality professional service through one's practice.
Non-discrimination: Approaching professional service with respect and cultural sensitivity.
Integrity in Professional Relationships: Dealing honestly and fairly with participants and colleagues.
Integrity in Business Practices: Dealing honestly and ethically in all business practices.
This is the universal symbol for a sign language interpreter.
It should only be used where interpreting services are provided by a credentialed interpreter. When you see this symbol you can trust that the interpreter will be following the Code of Ethics.
